The quality of a training centre is an important factor affecting the resulting competence of people that have undergone training. The outcome of measuring the quality of a training centre can therefore be an important management indicator for both training centres and their clients.

Benchmarking enables performance to be measured against specified criteria and compared with the “ideal” performance or against other training centres. DNV SeaSkill™ has designed a set of tools with the purpose of benchmarking training centres to assess their overall quality of performance against specified competence statements. Benchmarking focuses on four areas:

  • Centre course management - methods and procedures used to administer and manage the resources and activities of the centre.
  • Course Design - activities of preparing, developing and editing course materials.
  • Course Delivery - activities necessary to train participants including trainer performance and the quality of the learning materials.
  • Course Assessment and evaluation - how learners are assessed and how courses are evaluated.

Benchmarking of Training Providers can be done for both companies and third party training centres and it is intended for discrete, self-contained training courses. Educational programmes are not excluded as long as they follow the underpinning educational design principles.
