Cold ironing is taking power from shore while loading and unloading, which allows all auxiliaries to be shut down when berthed.

The initiative is expected to reduce air pollution in the Los Angeles and Long Beach areas substantially. Connection equipment must be installed onboard and ashore, but large power quantities are needed at high voltage e.g. 6.6KV. Especially, substantial power is needed when berthing for reefers onboard The question for owners is whether others terminals will follow.
